Originally developed in the oil industry, hydrofracturing (often referred to as hydrofracking or fracking) is a unique method to allow low yielding wells to produce more water. Hydrofracking involves injecting high pressure and high volumes of water into the formation(s) of bedrock to increase the size of existing fractures. This procedure enables an increase in well yield.


The water well hydrofracturing process involves injecting water under pressures as high as 3,000 pounds per square inch and at rates of up to 85 gallons per minute into the bedrock formation surrounding the well bore below the casing. One inflatable packer is placed more than 50 feet below the end of the casing and water is pumped through the packer under pressure. The bedrock is not actually fractured by the water pressure, instead sediment is forced out of existing joints and fractures in the bedrock surrounding the well bore, increasing their water-transmitting capacity. Two inflatable packers may be used to isolate specific zones in the bedrock to concentrate the effect of the water pressure on selected existing fractures. When the cleaned-out fractures and joints connect to other water-bearing fractures and joints, the yield of the water well is increased. Commonly, yields after hydrofracturing are five gallons per minute or less, but sometimes large yield increases may occur under certain geologic conditions.
